Designed by Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Herczog as part of the same millennium project that created Heroes' Square, this Neoclassical building runs on the German Kunsthalle model: no permanent collection, artist-run, entirely temporary shows. Every visit is different. The Műcsarnok Café looks directly onto the square.
What to look for
- The Greek Revival portico — the entrance facade signals the building's 1896 ambitions before you step inside
- The semi-circular apse and its roofed exhibition hall lit from above by skylights
- The Museum of Fine Arts directly opposite — both buildings were conceived as a single cultural complex for the millennium celebrations
Check the current temporary exhibition before visiting; the building has a bookshop and library on site alongside the café.
