Cloud Gate (The Bean)

110 tons of polished steel that bends Chicago's entire skyline around your face — Kapoor modeled it on liquid mercury, and it shows.

The 168 welded stainless steel plates are buffed to a finish with no visible seams, so the sculpture reads as one seamless mirror. Walk through the 12-foot arch and you hit the omphalos — a concave chamber on the underside that warps and multiplies reflections into something genuinely disorienting. Above you, the Loop skyline curves into a fisheye panorama that moves as clouds cross overhead.

What to look for

Free to visit at Grainger Plaza, Millennium Park — the arch is 12 feet high, so walk all the way underneath rather than just around the edge.

Cloud Gate (The Bean) is one of 37 sights worth the detour in Chicago, all bundled offline in Voyage GO — download the Chicago pack and it sits on your map with no signal, filling your travel passport the moment you walk past.
