Christian IV commissioned this Dutch Renaissance trading house in 1619, and it stood as the engine of Copenhagen commerce for over 300 years. The 2024 fire severely damaged the building and toppled its 56-metre spire — four twined dragon tails, one of the strangest silhouettes in Northern Europe. The shell of a building designed by Hans van Steenwinckel still stands next to Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen.
What to look for
- The roofline where the 56 m dragon-tail spire once rose — its absence is the story now
- The Dutch Renaissance facade, a rare surviving example of that style in Denmark
- Christiansborg Palace directly adjacent, anchoring the whole island of Slotsholmen
On Slotsholmen, steps from Christiansborg Palace; verify current access before visiting — restoration work following the April 2024 fire is ongoing.
