Frederik's Church (The Marble Church)
A church that sat as an open ruin in the middle of Copenhagen for nearly 150 years — and still ended up with the largest dome in Scandinavia.

Commissioned in 1749 to mark the 300-year jubilee of the House of Oldenburg, construction stalled through budget cuts, the death of architect Eigtved in 1754, and outright abandonment in 1770. The 31-metre Roman Baroque dome that eventually rose over Frederiksstaden sits due west of Amalienborg Palace and takes clear inspiration from St. Peter's in Rome.
What to look for
- The twelve columns carrying the dome — the original design called for a diameter of 45 metres, nearly half again as wide as what stands today
- Gold window frames and rows of statues covering the exterior walls
- The colorful fresco across the interior dome ceiling
Entrance is on the Frederiksstaden side, a short walk west from Amalienborg Palace.
