Over 2,300 paintings from the mid-13th century to 1900, built largely from private gifts and begun in 1824 with 38 pictures from the Angerstein collection. Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, Velázquez, Turner and Constable, with no admission charge.

The main collection is free, but it drew over 4.1 million visitors in 2025, so arrive at opening.
