Over 2,300 paintings from the mid-13th century to 1900, built largely from private gifts and begun in 1824 with 38 pictures from the Angerstein collection. Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, Velázquez, Turner and Constable, with no admission charge.
What to look for
- Wilkins's portico reuses columns from the demolished Carlton House, and its facade sculptures were cut for Nash's Marble Arch
- In the Sainsbury Wing, columns shrink in false perspective to pull your eye toward a Cima altarpiece
- Velázquez's Rokeby Venus, slashed by suffragette Mary Richardson in 1914 to protest Emmeline Pankhurst's arrest
The main collection is free, but it drew over 4.1 million visitors in 2025, so arrive at opening.
