Autobahn A8

You are driving on a road that Nazi engineers poured in 1934 — and on some stretches, almost nothing has changed.

Coming soon on iOS — be first to walk Munich offline.

The A8 east–west corridor from Karlsruhe to Salzburg, passing through Munich, still carries significant sections in their original 1930s Reichsautobahn form: two lanes each way, no emergency shoulder, steep gradients, and tight curves. Modern traffic volume on 90-year-old geometry is what makes it one of Germany's most congested and dangerous autobahns.

What to look for

In winter, allow extra time on the Irschenberg approach toward Salzburg; southbound truck queues form quickly on the uphill grade.

Autobahn A8 is one of 37 sights worth the detour in Munich, all bundled offline in Voyage GO — download the Munich pack and it sits on your map with no signal, filling your travel passport the moment you walk past.
