Hofbräuhaus am Platzl
A beer hall founded in 1589 where the only room to survive Allied bombing is still pouring Maß after Maß.

Opened to the general public by Ludwig I in 1828, nearly leveled in WWII, and faithfully rebuilt by Munich's 800th birthday in 1958, this is Munich's biggest draw after Oktoberfest. Tourists and locals share the same benches — many regulars keep their own ceramic mugs stored on-site, and traditional Bavarian music plays throughout the day.
What to look for
- The Schwemme — the historic beer hall and the only room that survived the wartime bombing, still the heart of the venue.
- Rows of stored Krüge (personal mugs) belonging to regulars who keep them here between visits.
- A Maß of Helles or Dunkles served alongside Brezn (soft pretzel) or Obatzda (cheese dip).
Traditional Bavarian music plays during regular hours; an outdoor Wirtsgarten is available for al-fresco drinking.
