Grini Detention Camp

A women's prison never used for its intended purpose — Norway's occupation turned it into a Nazi concentration camp the day the walls went up.

From June 1941 to May 1945, SS and Gestapo personnel ran Grini for Norwegian political prisoners, Soviet POWs captured during Operation Barbarossa, and common criminals. Of the 19,247 people who passed through, 3,402 were shipped onward to camps inside Germany. In 1942, teachers who defied the Nazi-backed union were held here for a single day before being transported to Kirkenes.
