In 1922, the fort's own guns opened fire on Rio — then the Brazilian navy shot back.

Built between 1908 and 1914 to guard Copacabana beach and Rio's harbor entrance, this headland fort became the flashpoint for Brazil's first tenentista revolt. Today the base is open to the public and houses the Museu Histórico do Exército (Army Historical Museum), with the original armored cupolas still in place.

What to look for

The base sits at the south end of Copacabana beach and is open to the public; the Army Historical Museum is inside the fort.
