National Historical Museum

Latin America's largest coin collection lives inside a fort that was, at various points, a slave prison and an ammunition depot.

Founded in 1922, the museum holds over 287,000 items across more than 25 exhibits — but the building earns as much attention as the collection. The complex accumulated its layers from 1567 to 1835: Portuguese fort, Calaboose Prison for enslaved people (1693), Casa do Trem weapons depot (1762), War Arsenal (1764), Barracks (1835). The library alone holds 57,000 titles, some dating to the 15th century.

What to look for

The complex covers 20,000 m² at Calaboose Point — allow at least two hours to work through the permanent exhibits.
