Plaza de España

A vast semicircle of hand-painted province tiles where every Spaniard hunts for their hometown alcove.

Built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, architect Aníbal González layered Art Deco, Spanish Renaissance, and Neo-Mudéjar styles into one enormous half-circle. Each of Spain's provinces gets its own tiled alcove, flanked by bookshelves visitors stock like a Little Free Library. The moat, four bridges, and central fountain make it feel more stage set than civic square.

What to look for

The surrounding arcades and alcoves are freely walkable; the buildings inside are active government offices.
