Ca' d'Oro

The name means "House of Gold" — the gilt and polychrome facade is long gone, but the bones of the finest Venetian Gothic palazzo still stand.

Built 1421–1437 near the Rialto Bridge for Marino Contarini, whose family supplied eight Venetian Doges, this is considered the best-surviving example of Venetian Gothic palace architecture. Since 1927 it has operated as the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti. Contarini's own construction accounts survived the centuries and are still studied by scholars.

What to look for

Reach it by vaporetto at the Ca' d'Oro stop on the Grand Canal, left bank, a short distance from the Rialto Bridge; the building is now a public museum.
