A 16th-century Manueline fort that served as the ceremonial gateway to Lisbon and the literal departure point for the Age of Discoveries. It sits on a small island in the Tagus — not on the riverbank, as often assumed — giving it an unusual detached presence that no photo quite captures.

What to look for

UNESCO-listed since 1983 alongside the nearby Jerónimos Monastery — both sites share the same Belém waterfront, so visit them together.

Belém Tower is one of 36 sights worth the detour in Lisbon, all bundled offline in Voyage GO — download the Lisbon pack and it sits on your map with no signal, filling your travel passport the moment you walk past.
