A 25.5-hectare park threading between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, shaped in 1564 as an Italian Renaissance garden complete with a labyrinth, a grotto, and faience imagery of plants and animals. It also served as the site of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic cauldron.
What to look for
- The strict geometric layout: the original design divided the space into rectangular compartments along six straight alleys — look for echoes of that grid as you walk.
- Quinconces: the clusters of five trees Bernard de Carnesse arranged in the Florentine pattern Catherine commissioned in 1564.
- Every sign bearing the name 'Tuileries' — a direct trace of the tile factories (tuileries, from tuile) that covered this ground since the 13th century.
Public park in the 1st arrondissement, on the natural walking axis between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde.
