Rua Augusta Arch

Designed as a bell tower, it spent over a century becoming a triumphal arch — then went colossal on top.

Built to mark Lisbon's recovery from the 1755 earthquake, the arch is packed with Portuguese history in stone. French sculptor Célestin Anatole Calmels staged the summit allegory — Glory rewarding Valor and Genius — while four column statues by Victor Bastos name Vasco da Gama, Viriatus, the Marquis of Pombal, and Nuno Alvares Pereira. The figures had to be made colossal because the cornice clears 30 metres.

What to look for

The arch stands at the north end of Praça do Comércio, the main riverside square — walk straight through it to reach the pedestrian streets of Baixa.
